It's promoted as being made by the team behind Your Name. While it features some of the awe-inspiring animation that Makoto Shinkai made so popular, it features very little of the emotional depth and complexity that could be found in his films.
The first film, about a young boy remembering his youth through the experience of eating noodles, is cute enough to get a pass. I hate the way food is presented in animes because it looks so fuckin' tasty but then I realize the real-life dishes at least some of them are not as amazing as they build them up to be. I didn't know what to expect from Flavors of Youth , but when I saw the same people that brought us Your Name.
Reminiscing childhood, falling in love the old-fashioned way. From the Studio that made Your Name an anthology of three short films emotional, pleasing and so so gorgeous ah.
The best looking rice noodles I've ever seen. I'm a sucker for the animation here - the short stories themselves are fine. The structure reminded me of 5 Centimeters Per Second minus the uhh intense emotional agony. It never really strives to be anything more than a series of gorgeous images accompanied by soft, contemplative monologues.
The overall feel of the film is delightful and it warms me up.
